IT Security Services Office

The Information Technology Security Services (ITSS) Office, which was created in 2004, collaborates with individual University of Michigan units to develop a University-wide security strategy and to implement best practice security efforts. Other primary ITSS activities include:
  • Facilitating campus-wide incident response activities
  • Providing services such as security assessments and consultation, network scans, education and training
  • Managing IT security issues at the University level

ITSS Sponsorship, Direction, and Partnerships

ITSS is sponsored by Dr. Robert Kelch, Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs; Teresa Sullivan, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs; Stephen Forrest, Vice President for Research, and Tim Slottow, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer.

  • Laura Patterson, Associate Vice President for Administrative Information Systems, provides overall direction and support for ITSS.
  • Paul Howell, the University's Chief IT Security Officer, heads the ITSS Office. In addition to overseeing IT Security Services activities and managing ITSS staff, he serves on the IT Security Council (ITSC).
  • ITSS works with ITSC to maintain a secure IT environment for U-M teaching, learning, research, and administrative activities.
  • The creation of ITSS and ITSC resulted from various University units working together through the IT Commons.
